A new era of WRF modeling

At Hazard Notifications, one thing we have prided ourselves on is our brilliant staff who continue to push the limits of advanced atmospheric modeling every day. Over the past month, our staff has continued to develop and improve on our 3D VAR technology. This allows us to import more than a 1/2 million observations worldwide, level 2 radar, satellite observations and more. These data go into the model to offer a precise prediction of future conditions.

We are now working to expand into the realm of 4D VAR, the same technology implemented by the ECMWF model, which is known for its precision. This method assimilates ~12 million obs, while updating 80 million state variables each analysis. Being able to utilize these methods in the WRF would create an invaluable model that would be useful for an incredibly wide range of applications.

In simpler terms, our research team continues to seek ways to improve our technology. These efforts are further encouraged by positive words from our current customers. Below are a few images that come to us from BAM Chase LLC, a weather consulting company from Indiana.  While always impressed, recently they took the time to send us some images from the model’s exceptional performance. You can also view a previous analysis of our WRF in a variety of scenarios.

In addition to developing superior forecasting techniques, we also continuously work on forecast products. Such as our proprietary hail, snow load and ice load algorithms. Beyond that, using machine learning techniques, we can provide advanced financial loss predictions, power outage predictions and much more.

Unique weather decision support system for fixed location alerting before and during the storm

Norman, OK August 21, 2014 – Until today, weather forecasts and notifications in relation to organizational risks have been unavailable at sufficiently localized scales to properly supplement the decision making process. In response, Hazard Notifications, LLC has created HazAlerting, the only full featured weather risk assessment system available on the market today that alerts up to two days prior to specific weather threats at one or more fixed locations.

HazAlerting assures business continuity with respect to environmental hazards by warning organizations of threats to workforce and assets up to 48 hours in advance; this in addition to immediate threats such as weather watches and warnings. Threats monitored and alerted for can include impending hail, wind, lightning, winter, extreme temperature and tornado threats, to name a few.

“Traditionally, concentration has been focused upon warning of immediate weather threats,” Brandon Sullivan, Managing Partner of Hazard Notifications advised. “HazAlerting ingests multiple weather model systems and applies our proprietary numerical analysis in order to assess specific risks at specific locations anywhere in the U.S.” He adds “Fresh new data sets are the future of meteorological impact analysis and that’s precisely the business model we have established.”

Use case

  • Respond to incoming weather threats in relation to personnel and asset protection with unprecedented lead time

Advanced Storm Tracking

Advanced Storm Tracking

A few days ago, we broke news about our new and innovative technology that promises to redefine weather business. Today, we talk about one of the features included in the powerful tools : Storm Cell Tracking. Our advanced radar processing algorithms monitor thunderstorm movement and strength including hail size, as it approaches your asset. Additionally, our street level lightning data can pinpoint the lightning associated with a thunderstorm. You can set a radius to be notified for, as a storm approaches. For example, say you are in charge of outdoor activities and need to know when a thunderstorm is within 30 miles for lightning concerns, set your radius to 30 miles and our system will tell you when a storm will be within 30 miles. This provides substantially more lead time than severe weather warnings (don’t worry, of course we have those too), as you can be told before your area is even warned!

Another fascinating component to our system is the ability to filter out alerts for storms that are inside your radius, but are moving away and will pose no threat. For example, storms may form 20 miles east of you, but move east, away from your asset. Unless you desire, there will be no alert to alert you to a non threat.

Stay tuned as we continue to occasionally post more and more information about this exciting new technology!
